Sonoma Academy Wins Battle of Unbeatens, Edges Calistoga 2-1

@CALISTOGA — Two undefeated teams entered Friday night's matchup in Calistoga. Only Sonoma Academy left with its unbeaten record intact.

Reed Cellitioci (So.) and Josh Bai (Jr.) scored second-half goals as Sonoma Academy handed Calistoga its first loss of the season, 2-1. Mateo Medina (Sr.) pulled one back for the Wildcats in the closing minutes, while goalkeeper Mateo Gonzalez Saucedo (So.) made several key saves to keep Calistoga in the game.

The matchup featured two unbeaten teams with contrasting strengths. Calistoga looked most dangerous when it could settle into possession, particularly through Leo Ramos (Sr.) and Medina, while Sonoma used its physicality and pressure to create problems.

Sonoma generated the better chances for much of the first half. Marcel Nsizoa Ndi (Jr.) hit the post early, and Liam Kramer (Sr.) repeatedly turned his long throw-ins into dangerous set-piece opportunities. Gonzalez Saucedo was called into action several times, including an impressive save on a flicked effort from Nsizoa Ndi.

Calistoga had its moments as well. Ramos consistently looked composed under pressure and helped the Wildcats play through Sonoma's press, while Medina provided another strong presence in midfield. Still, neither side could break through before halftime.

Calistoga opened the second half on the front foot. Ramos and Medina combined effectively, and Ramos delivered a dangerous free kick that Sonoma narrowly cleared.

But just as the Wildcats appeared to be gaining control, Sonoma struck.

Nsizoa Ndi broke through one-on-one and hit the post, but Cellitioci capitalized on the ensuing opportunity, curling home the opening goal with roughly 33 minutes remaining.

Calistoga nearly responded when Ramos played a well-weighted ball through the Sonoma defense that resulted in a goal, only for the Wildcats to be ruled offside.

Minutes later, Sonoma doubled its advantage. A ball whipped across the penalty area found Bai, who powered his finish through traffic to make it 2-0 with approximately 23 minutes remaining.

The Coyotes began to take greater control from there, but Calistoga stayed within reach thanks in large part to Gonzalez Saucedo and Aecos Chavez (Sr.). Chavez produced a strong performance in central defense, while Gonzalez Saucedo continued denying Sonoma, including another close-range effort from Nsizoa Ndi.

Calistoga continued pushing for a way back and finally found it with fewer than two minutes remaining.

Medina unleashed a powerful strike from outside the box and buried it into the upper-right corner, cutting the deficit to 2-1. The goal gave the Wildcats late hope, but there wasn't enough time remaining to find an equalizer.

For Calistoga, Ramos was a consistent influence in possession, Medina capped a strong midfield performance with the late goal, and Gonzalez Saucedo's saves kept the Wildcats alive. For Sonoma, Kramer's long throws and Nsizoa Ndi's presence caused problems throughout the night before Cellitioci and Bai ultimately provided the decisive finishes.

In a matchup between two teams that had yet to lose, Sonoma found just enough in the second half to make sure it was the only one that stayed that way.
