NCS Div II Boys Games of the Week: a Sonoma Academy player striking the ball

A week of Division II results brought an upset in the East Bay, a first defeat in weeks for Clear Lake, more of the same from Sonoma Academy and a new name at the top in San Francisco.

Quarry Lane had not lost in five games when Redwood Christian came to visit on October 1. The Cougars led the Bay Counties League at 4-0-0 and went in as favourites on this season's results. Redwood Christian (Eagles), still without a point in league play, had other ideas. They led 3-0 at half-time and won 4-0, ending Quarry Lane's unbeaten run and leaving them 5-2-0. The Eagles had arrived having won three in a row, and they are now 5-6-0.

Two days earlier, Quarry Lane had looked like the side to catch. They went to California Crosspoint (Rams) on September 29 for a rematch of last season's playoff meeting and won 6-4, their first win over Crosspoint in four meetings on record, after the previous three had all been drawn. Quarry Lane led 5-1 at half-time. Kaiyi Yang scored twice, Pranav Deepesh and Khoi Le each scored once and set up another, and Chuanhe Yang and Aarav Tuli added a goal apiece. Jesse Wu had two assists, with one each from Dhyan Vakhraya and Brian Zhang. Quarry Lane still lead the league, and they go to Freedom Christian on Friday.

Up in Lake County, the North Central League I was reshuffling. Clear Lake (Cardinal) won three games all of last season, finishing 3-9-0. They went to Lower Lake on September 29 at 9-2-3 and unbeaten in six. It was 0-0 at half-time, and Lower Lake (Trojans) won 2-1. Sophomores Adrian Guzman and Yael Viverios each scored once and set up another. Lower Lake, who had lost their two previous games, had also won all three earlier meetings on record. Fort Bragg have since gone top of the league at 4-1-0, with Lower Lake third at 4-2-1.

At the other end of that table, Cloverdale (Eagle) had lost six in a row. They went to Upper Lake (Cougars) the same night in what this season's results called an even game, and won 5-1. It was their first win in seven games, and it lifts them to 2-6-0. Upper Lake are still looking for a first win, at 0-12-0.

In the North Central League II, Sonoma Academy (Coyotes) have won every game they have played this fall, and they opened the week by making sure the run went on. Oakland Military Institute were the visitors in a non-league game on September 28, and Sonoma Academy won 3-1 with goals from three different players. Marcel Nsizoa Ndi, senior Jonah Knuth and sophomore Maddox Rogers each scored once. Sophomore Ben McCauley set up two and senior Teo Foehl one. The Coyotes followed it with a league win over Technology on Friday, and they remain the only Division II side without a defeat or a draw.

In San Francisco, the Bay Counties League - Central has a new leader. Jewish Community (Wolves) welcomed San Francisco Waldorf (Wolverines) on October 1 as clear favourites, and the margin was as narrow as it gets. Sinai Bierman scored, set up by Avery Sezak, and Jewish Community won 1-0. Junior keeper Ahron Schweig made six saves for the shutout. The win took Jewish Community to 9-2-0 and 4-1-0 in the league, and past Bay School of San Francisco into first place. A year ago they finished fourth of six with a 5-7-4 record.
