Bentley captured the BCL East League Championship with a dramatic 2–1 overtime victory over Athenian, completing a comeback after trailing midway through the second half. Following a scoreless opening period and a pair of second-half penalties, the Phoenix found the decisive goal in overtime to claim the league title in a tightly contested matchup that saw both teams create opportunities throughout the afternoon.
Athenian controlled much of the early attacking pressure, with winger Jolan Raby (No. 11) repeatedly creating problems for Bentley's defense. Raby's ability to take defenders on individually and deliver dangerous balls into the penalty area made him one of Athenian's most influential attacking players.
One of Athenian's first significant opportunities came when Judah Mukome (No. 14) found Raby inside the box. The winger produced a sharp cutback to beat his defender but sent his shot wide of the right post.
Emeka Obiora (No. 9) also provided an important presence in Athenian's attack, using his strength to hold up possession and bring teammates into play. His willingness to track back defensively helped Athenian maintain pressure and compete for possession across the field.
Bentley responded with opportunities of its own. A counterattack produced a dangerous cross from Julian Gandhi (Sr., No. 29), which William Nice (Jr., No. 20) headed over the crossbar with approximately 26 minutes remaining in the opening half.
Junior Koji Green (No. 17) helped Bentley settle into the match through his composure and control in midfield. Green consistently looked comfortable in possession, helping the Phoenix work through Athenian's pressure and create attacking opportunities.
With approximately 12 minutes remaining before halftime, Bentley earned a free kick just outside the penalty area. Mitchell Pamp (Jr., No. 6) laid the ball off to Green, whose effort narrowly missed the target.
Athenian continued threatening through Raby, whose crosses and individual runs forced Bentley's defense into several important clearances. Khang Le (No. 20) nearly benefited from one of Raby's deliveries but could not bring the ball under control inside the area.
Bentley senior Chase Rose (No. 5) came close to breaking the deadlock just before halftime, firing a shot from outside the box narrowly wide.
Despite Athenian creating the better chances for much of the opening period, neither side found a breakthrough, sending the teams into halftime tied 0–0.
The second half began with more balanced possession as both teams traded attacks. Athenian continued testing Bentley's defense, but the Phoenix produced several important interventions, including a well-timed block from junior Stoyan Atanassov (No. 4).
Athenian eventually broke through with approximately 26 minutes remaining when the team was awarded a penalty. The Athenian goalkeeper stepped forward to take the spot kick and converted, giving his team a 1–0 advantage.
Bentley responded by increasing its attacking pressure, with Rose continuing to challenge Athenian's back line. With approximately 20 minutes remaining, the senior created space on a breakaway and fired toward goal, but Athenian's goalkeeper produced an excellent save.
Three minutes later, Rose won a penalty for Bentley, giving the Phoenix an opportunity to equalize.
Green stepped up to take the spot kick, but his initial attempt was saved by Athenian's goalkeeper. The junior reacted quickly to the rebound and finished the second opportunity, bringing Bentley level at 1–1 with approximately 17 minutes remaining.
Both teams continued searching for a winner in the closing stages of regulation. Bentley's goalkeeper produced an impressive diving save with 13 minutes remaining, while Green created another dangerous opportunity after turning through two defenders and driving toward goal.
Rose also came close in the final minutes, weaving past multiple defenders before forcing another save from Athenian's goalkeeper.
Neither side could find the decisive goal before the end of regulation, sending the championship match into overtime tied 1–1.
Athenian opened the first overtime period with attacking intent. Raby nearly connected with a dangerous cross inside the box, sending a header just over the crossbar, while another effort narrowly missed the right post.
Bentley continued looking for opportunities through Rose, whose pace and ability to attack defenders remained a threat on the counterattack.
Athenian's goalkeeper also nearly produced another remarkable moment, taking a long-range free kick from approximately 35 yards that forced an excellent save from Bentley's keeper.
The second overtime period brought more pressure from both teams. Clark Li (No. 28) impressed in Athenian's midfield, displaying composure on the ball and forcing another save with a shot from distance.
Raby continued to threaten Bentley's defense, weaving through multiple players before sending a left-footed effort narrowly wide.
At the other end, sophomore Keannou Iniquez Howell (No. 25) created danger with a sharp cut past his defender near the right side of the penalty area, followed by a left-footed ball across goal.
With the championship hanging in the balance, Bentley ultimately found the decisive goal in overtime, completing a 2–1 comeback victory after trailing midway through the second half. The late winner capped a dramatic contest in which both teams had opportunities to take control.
For Bentley, Green's composure in midfield and crucial penalty rebound helped turn the match around, while Rose's relentless attacking runs created several of the team's best opportunities. Iniquez Howell also provided an important attacking presence as the game stretched into overtime.
Athenian produced a strong performance despite the defeat. Raby was a constant threat on the wing, Obiora contributed through his physical presence and hold-up play, and Mukome and Li helped create opportunities through the midfield. The Athenian goalkeeper also delivered several important saves while scoring the team's penalty.
Ultimately, Bentley's overtime winner proved the difference, completing a hard-fought comeback and securing the BCL East League Championship with a dramatic 2–1 victory over an Athenian side that pushed the Phoenix throughout regulation and extra time.
