CVC Strikes Before the Break, Holds Off Monte Vista to Claim Open Crown
by Jack Flowers · Winter 2025
On a night defined by intensity and fine margins, CVC delivered a composed performance to edge Monte Vista 2–1 in a tightly contested battle between two of the section’s top sides. Kristian Ortiz Estrada (#10) provided the early breakthrough for CVC, while Peyton Miller (#23) quickly emerged as a driving force for Monte Vista as the match settled into a high-tempo rhythm.
CVC’s opener came through sharp attacking movement, with Ortiz Estrada finishing decisively to give the visitors the advantage. Monte Vista responded with authority, led by Miller’s direct running and relentless pressing. Sustained pressure pinned CVC deep in their own half, disrupting their ability to build out cleanly and forcing hurried clearances as the Mustangs began to control territory.
Wave after wave of Monte Vista pressure followed. Long throws caused chaos inside the box, deliveries flashed across goal, and the CVC goalkeeper proved pivotal — producing multiple crucial stops to preserve the lead and steady his side during extended spells under pressure. From the back, Henry Heddan (#8) stepped confidently into possession, helping sustain attacking sequences and ensuring the momentum rarely shifted away from MV.
The equalizer eventually arrived before halftime when Colin Huberty (#7) finished smartly after a well-worked sequence assisted by Colin Job (#14), leveling the match at 1–1 and fully rewarding Monte Vista’s dominance.
But CVC’s response was immediate.
Moments later, Giovanni Martinez-Negrete (#23) led a swift counterattack, isolated his defender inside the area, and buried a composed finish into the top corner to restore the lead before the break. It was a ruthless reminder of CVC’s ability to absorb pressure and strike with precision.
The second half followed a similar pattern. Monte Vista pushed numbers forward and dictated possession, while CVC remained compact and dangerous on the counter. The physicality increased, cautions followed, and every duel carried added weight.
One of the defining defensive moments came midway through the half when Heddan (#8) stood up Rohman Mahmood (#9) in a crucial 1-v-1 situation. Timing his challenge perfectly, he denied Mahmood a clear path to goal and kept Monte Vista within striking distance.
As the final minutes approached, Monte Vista nearly forced extra time. With under two minutes remaining, an MV attacker broke through and rounded the goalkeeper, but the touch carried slightly too wide. The ball rolled agonizingly across the face of goal and drifted out of play — a golden opportunity that would have tied the match at the death.
CVC held firm through the closing stages, backed by a standout goalkeeping performance that proved decisive on the night.
