Berkeley Edge 16-Seed Ygnacio Valley 2–1 in Double-Overtime Classic
by Jack Flowers · Winter 2025
Top-seeded Berkeley were pushed to the absolute limit Wednesday night, needing a double-overtime winner to escape a fearless 16-seed Ygnacio Valley side in a gripping 2–1 NCS CIF first-round battle.
From the opening whistle, Berkeley asserted themselves through possession. #10 Henry Markus (Sr.) immediately set the tone, calmly dictating play in midfield and consistently finding pockets between the lines. Alongside him, #6 Calder Corson (Sr.) helped circulate the ball cleanly as the Yellowjackets pinned Ygnacio Valley inside their own half for extended stretches. On the other side, #10 Alan Garcia (Sr.) provided composure for Ygnacio Valley, controlling tempo whenever the Wolves were able to break pressure.
Despite Berkeley’s territorial dominance, clear chances were limited early. Ygnacio Valley defended compactly and looked dangerous in transition, particularly through #7 Alejandro Avalos (Sr.), who intercepted a pass and drove nearly the full length of the field to spark one of the Wolves’ first threatening moments. Berkeley leaned on the physical presence of #30 Jake Goetting (Sr.), whose hold-up play allowed runners like #12 Jasper Kirsch (So.) and #9 Luca MacCarthy (Jr.) to join the attack.
As the half progressed, Berkeley’s pressure intensified. Kirsch drove across the top of the box and forced a strong save from Ygnacio Valley goalkeeper #0 Juan Garcia (Sr.), who would prove instrumental throughout the night. The Yellowjackets combined sharply in tight midfield spaces, repeatedly building pressure and sustaining possession, but Ygnacio Valley’s defensive work rate kept the match level.
Then, just before halftime, the underdogs struck. A deep ball into the area caused chaos, and after a headed knockdown, #23 Angel Verduzco (Sr.) reacted quickest, volleying home from point-blank range to give Ygnacio Valley a stunning 1–0 lead against the run of play.
Berkeley emerged from the break with renewed urgency. The back line, anchored by #2 Willem Vincent (Sr.), was composed both on the ball and in the air, stepping forward to keep Ygnacio Valley pinned deep. Markus continued to orchestrate in midfield, while the fullbacks pushed high to stretch the field.
The equalizer finally came midway through the second half. A lofted free kick from distance dropped dangerously into the six-yard box, creating mayhem in traffic. After a scramble and what appeared to be the slightest touch in a crowded area, the ball found the back of the net to make it 1–1.
Ygnacio Valley refused to fold. Garcia remained calm under pressure, and #11 Derek Orellana (Jr.) provided 1v1 energy on the wing. A late deflected long ball nearly restored Ygnacio Valley’s lead, and Juan Garcia came up with another big save in traffic to force overtime as Berkeley continued to dominate possession but struggled to find a clean finish.
The first overtime period followed a similar script — Berkeley controlling the ball, Ygnacio Valley defending resolutely. A dangerous Berkeley corner narrowly missed its target as the top seed searched for a breakthrough. During overtime, Vincent exited with an injury and did not return, forcing Berkeley to adjust at the back.
The decisive moment arrived just 30 seconds into the second overtime period. A perfectly weighted through ball split the Ygnacio Valley defense and found #3 Jack Hernandez (Sr.) in stride. Hernandez took one composed touch into the box before firing low. The shot ricocheted through the goalkeeper’s legs in the wet and slippery conditions and rolled across the line.
Final Score: Berkeley 2–1 Ygnacio Valley
